Exercising to Lower BMI

Yes, if your main focus is to lower your BMI then you want to avoid exercises that build body mass (anaerobic) and focus on exercises that are useful for losing fat (aerobic).

Aerobic exercise is any exercise that works to increase your heart rate (cardiovascular exercise). Running, dancing, swimming, rowing, step climbing, etc. are all exercises that fall under the category of aerobic exercise.

Most personal trainers and even doctors recommend a combination of exercises to stay healthy. Initially, however, you may find that aerobic exercise helps you to keep on track because you are seeing weight loss. If you are extremely overweight you should speak to your doctor before you start any type of exercise so that you don’t injure yourself or create other health issues.

You should understand that having a high BMI rate does not necessarily mean you are overweight if you are heavily muscled. Why Your Child Gets Special Treatment

As an adult, there is no consideration taken into account regarding your age and your gender. For a child, however, both of these things are taken into consideration. Why? Well, the bottom line is that a child is still growing. An 8 year old girl may have a higher BMI than a 15 year old girl because the 8 year old still has her baby fat. These things are taken into consideration when a child’s BMI is determined.

When a child’s body mass index is being configured, their weight and height are compared to a national chart of children in their age group. They are ranked in a percentile of children, much like what happens when you take your child to the doctor for their annual physical. The doctor will pull out a growth chart and show you how your child compares to other children in the same age group. This is virtually the same; a child’s weight, height and age are placed on a chart by gender, their placement on that chart will determine their BMI index. If a child is in the 95 percentile, then they are considered overweight according to BMI charts.

What You Need to Know about Getting A BMI for A Child

The BMI index isn’t just for telling you if your child is overweight; it determines if he or she is underweight too. There are many changes going on in a child’s body when they are between the ages of 8 and 16 and, as such, they often look like walking scarecrows with their clothing hanging off. If your child is determined to be underweight, consider your child’s lifestyle. Are they eating well, do they get plenty of exercise, do they have a high-energy rate and output? If you answered yes to these questions, then you probably don’t have a reason to be concerned, especially if they gain weight over time.

Regardless, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics both recommend that BMI assessments be done to all children beginning at age two, as it can be a predictor of future health problems.

It is important to note that BMI assessments cannot be used as a diagnostic tool. What this means is that you can’t check your child’s BMI and assume that they are healthy or unhealthy based on the results. Only a doctor can assess the overall health of a child so it is important to maintain regular physicals for your children no matter what their BMI is.

Lastly, a BMI only determines the possibility of obesity; in order to determine fat to muscle ratio, you need to use a formula that determines the percentage of body fat your child has; a BMI doesn’t do this. However, a BMI is an excellent way to determine if there might be a problem. The truth is, you can look at your child and determine for yourself if they are fat or muscular. Muscular kids don’t have fat rolls or a round tummy and face. Keep that in mind before you decide to dismiss the BMI results for your child because you think they are simply ‘solid.’ When your child’s health is at stake, you can’t be too careful.

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a method for calculating your body mass, which in turn helps identify how much fat your body is storing. For health purposes as well as for weight loss, it is important to have more muscle mass than fat.

Muscle weighs more than fat, so you can never rely on body weight alone to determine how much fat you have. Instead, you should calculate your body mass by using a BMI calculator. There are different methods that can be used to calculate your body composition, although the BMI method is one of the most accurate.

To calculate your BMI, multiply your weight (in pounds) by 703 and divide it by your height in square inches (or just divide by inches two times). Why BMI Matters

Weight is an important factor of health, whether you are too thin or whether you are too heavy. Knowing the right weight for you, however, is not as simple as reading the number on a scale. You cannot go by scale weight alone. Muscle helps burn fat, so the more muscle you have the less fat you will have but the more you will actually weigh on a scale. Charting your weight and your height can help you gauge what your body fat is in relation to the expected standard. Once you know what your BMI is then you can act on that accordingly.

Calculating Your BMI

The two components to BMI are height and weight; and then their relationship to each other gets charted to determine your fat risk category. Your height is then determined by the tallest part of your head, so mark this point accordingly (either on the wall or a growth chart of some sort). Measure your height and round it off to the nearest quarter inch. Convert your height of feet and inches all into inches. To do this in metric, measure your height in centimeters.

In order to measure your weight, you will need a scale. The scale needs to be placed on a hard level surface and you need to stand flat and straight on it wearing as little clothing as possible (none would be best). The scale will provide you with the output of your weight. In order to calculate your BMI, round your weight to the nearest pound. To do this in metric, measure your weight in kilograms.

Once you have your height and weight, you can calculate your BMI using one of the formulas or you can simply use the BMI calculator on this website. Reminder: To calculate your BMI manually, take your weight, multiply it by 703, and then divide it by your height in inches. Take this number and then divide it by your height in inches again. Another way to do this is to take your weight, multiply it by 703, and then divide it by your height in square inches. The resulting number is your BMI value.

How do I figure out my BMI index?

BMI or Body Mass Index is a healthy way to determine if you are at a healthy body weight. There are two main ways to figure out your BMI index. The first one is to use a BMI calculator like the one on this page. After you put in the requested information it will calculate your BMI for you.

The other way is to calculate it yourself by multiplying your weight by 703. Then divide that answer by your height in inches and divide that answer by your height in inches again. So a 150 pound person who is 5 feet 5 inches tall would do the calculation this way:

150 x 703= 105,450.
105,450/65 (height in inches) = 1622.30

What are the benefits of using the BMI index?

Using the BMI index provides a more accurate description of where a person is weight wise. This is because it takes into consideration height, weight, and gender. This is a safer average than striving for a BMI of less than 25 which is recommended for those under 65.

The third exception is children. The number of obese children in the United States is rising dramatically. It may be tempting to input your children’s information in a BMI calculator and make your own conclusions. Though this can be a starting point, only a pediatrician can properly evaluate the overall health of a child. If you suspect that your child is overweight or obese, speak with your pediatrician right away. Often making simple changes in your child’s diet or level of activity can solve the problem, but is important not to rely solely on a BMI index. There are special child based BMI calculators to be used instead of adult calculators.

The last exception is lean athletes. This category is mainly made up of long distance runners and swimmers. These athletes rely on lean, yet healthy, bodies to go far in their sport. A BMI index for a lean athlete may register as underweight, even though that person is healthy and eats more calories than people in other categories. It is the ratio of calorie intake to calorie burning that makes these athletes successful.

Measuring BMI for Women

Most males happen to think that the hottest BMI is one that falls within the healthy weight to height range of 18.5 and 25. Men and a BMI Below 18.5

What does my BMI number mean?

Anything less than 18.5 is considered underweight for the body mass index. A normal BMI is within the 18.5 to 24.9 range. Between 25 and 29.9 is overweight and a BMI of 30 or higher is obese. A female who is 5’5” and weighs 165 pounds, for example, has a BMI of 27.5. To be in the normal BMI weight range for her height, the woman should weigh around 150 pounds.

A person’s body mass index is supposed to be an indication of the person’s health. It provides a more exact understanding of health because it takes into consideration the person’s height rather than just weight. Of course, BMI also has its own limitations, as well. Among other things, it does not take into account a person’s muscle mass. Someone who is incredibly muscular and fit may have a BMI calculation that says he or she is overweight.

Additionally, someone could be very slim and fall perfectly within the healthy range, but have poor diet or make other poor lifestyle choices. In that case, as well, the BMI will not serve as a practical indication of someone’s health. Yet the BMI scale continues to provide one of the more accurate scales of fitness. In general, those with a body mass index within the normal ranges are healthier. They tend to have less physical ailments, and better immune systems because all of their systems are working together.

Where did the BMI scale come from?

The BMI scale is also sometimes known as the Quetelet formula, after the Belgian who created it, Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet. He was an astronomer, mathematician, sociologist, and statistician. He was interested in a field of study called social physics, which led him to look for statistical laws in social phenomena such as criminology (crime rates), marriage rates, suicide rates, and even public health issues.

This was referred to as “anthropometry,” which literally means “measurement of humans.” It is the term used to describe the process where scientists measure and study human individuals in order to come to a larger understanding about variations between them, including physical variations. Today, this kind of study is used in clothing and product design, among other things that depend on an understanding of body sizes and dimensions in order to be most optimized.

He developed the Quetelet index (or the body mass index) in 1844 by measuring 5000 Scottish soldiers—the anthropometry at work. His index has been referred to by professionals ever since.

How do I use my BMI number?

Figuring out your BMI is a great place (probably the best place) to start when you are trying to get an idea where you stand in terms of the health range. And it is incredibly easy to get a quick answer; it will literally tell you in seconds, as long as it takes to plug in a few numbers and hit “Calculate!” It can tell you so much more than a scale can, and it is private; the results are just between you and your Internet.

BMI stands for body mass index, and is a figure that attempts to illustrate someone’s approximate health by taking into consideration his or her height and weight. Limitations of BMI

Those with a normal BMI tend to be healthier, overall. It is good to keep in mind, however, the various limitations of the BMI scale. In addition to not accounting for bone density, the scale also does not consider the muscle mass of individuals. It is entirely possible that a person who is incredibly fit may have a BMI that says they are overweight—possibly even obese. A person may also have a relatively healthy weight but be very, very unhealthy in terms of diet, exercise, and / or lifestyle. The BMI is not a hard and fast rule and will not be the perfect scale of measurement for everyone.

BMI and Children

Calculating BMI for children (those under the age of 20) works differently than for adults. While there is the same height to weight aspect, a child’s BMI is also determined through comparison with the BMIs of other children of the same sex and age. So, a child whose BMI falls in the 5th percentile is considered underweight, and one whose BMI falls between the 85th and 95th percentile is overweight. Over the 95th percentile is considered obese. Take this with a grain of salt. Children’s bodies are constantly changing with puberty, baby fat and constant growth. BMI is merely one indication of a child’s overall health.

History of BMI

Despite those disclaimers, the BMI scale, by and large, continues to be one of the most used calculators to make an initial determination of the state of someone’s weight. And it has been the primarily go-to calculator for over one hundred years—seriously!

A man named Lamber Adolphe Jaques Quetelet came up with the formula in 1844 after measuring 5000 Scottish soldiers. It was part of a study he did while developing a field called “social physics,” which refers to looking for laws of statistics in such social phenomena as public health. After the measurement of the 5000 soldiers, the Quetelet index was created and has been used ever sense—though it has been called the body mass index since 1972. In that year, a study was published that stated using the body mass index was better for a population at large than for individuals.

A survey published in 1994 through the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey said that 59% of men and 49% of women in America had BMIs over 25. In 2007, another survey showed that 63% of Americans are now overweight, and that 26% of them are obese. In 1994, 2% of men, and 4% of women were morbidly obese. It is no secret that Americans are, by and large, increasingly becoming overweight and less healthy.

While it definitely has its limitations, the body mass index can give you a good, fast, idea about where you stand. What is a healthy BMI for a new mother?

There is no set number indicating a healthy BMI or body mass index for a new mother. Contrary to what some women think, or hope, the baby weight doesn’t magically fall off as soon as the baby is born.

The length of time it will take to get back to a pre-pregnancy weight depends on how much the woman gained during her pregnancy and the lifestyle choices she makes after delivery. BMI is merely one indication of a healthy person.

Weight Gain and BMI During Pregnancy

It’s normal to put on weight during pregnancy, and a woman who is expecting should discuss it with her doctor. Not only is the total weight gain during the process important, but the woman and her doctor should be monitoring how much weight she is putting on at each stage of the pregnancy. A sudden in crease in weight gain or not gaining enough weight may be signs of health issues that need to be addressed.

The goal is to make sure that the developing baby gets enough nourishment from the mother so that he or she can develop to a healthy weight before birth. Low birth weight babies are more likely to have health issues, and if the mother is able to gain between 28-40 lbs., she and her baby will benefit.

When a woman starts off her pregnancy being overweight or obese, her doctor will probably suggest that she limit her weight gain during pregnancy. In the case of a patient with a BMI of 25-30, a weight gain of 15-25 lbs. would likely be recommended. For a woman who is at a higher than normal weight with a BMI of 30 or above, the recommended weight gain throughout the pregnancy is 15 lbs. Your body is different from that of other women. Losing Weight after Baby Arrives

A new mother has many demands on her time after her baby arrives, and lack of sleep when caring for a newborn makes it more challenging for you to take care of your own health. It’s not unusual for a woman who has given birth within the past 12 months to retain a few pounds of the baby weight that she has trouble shedding. Give yourself a little time.

For the majority of women, the weight gain is four to five pounds of stubborn baby weight. Approximately one in five new mothers weigh between eight to eleven pounds more 12 months or more after the birth of their child. Don’t despair. By charting your BMI over time and taking the following actions you can return to a healthy BMI.

How to Attain a Healthy Post-Baby BMI

There are some things that a new mother can do to help get her weight to a healthy post-baby BMI level. One of the best things that you can do is to breast feed for as long as possible. It takes a considerable amount of energy to produce milk, which helps to shed the weight gained during pregnancy more easily. The act of nursing also causes your uterus to contract, which means it will shrink to a pre-pregnancy size more quickly. (If you are unable to nurse for any reason, don’t fall into a guilt trap. If you can nurse you need to eat well in order to support your body in producing milk.
